Effluent Protection
Help retain unwanted product at the vessel discharge point before it can reach downstream effluent-treatment equipment.

Effluent Protection & Product Recovery
Control the Discharge at Source
When wastewater is decanted from a process or storage vessel, an unwanted lighter phase can follow it into the drain. A correctly selected Belfield Valve responds to the phase change and closes the main outlet, helping retain product before downstream treatment.
How the Process Works
01
Process or storage vessel: allow the phases to settle.
02
Belfield Valve: discharge the heavier phase and respond to the interface.
03
Downstream treatment: receive the intended discharge through the reviewed system.
Conceptual discharge sequence only. Final pipework, isolation and safeguards must be designed for the actual process.
Protection Is Not Complete Treatment
The valve is a phase-responsive discharge device, not a complete oil-water separator or wastewater-treatment plant. It does not establish that discharged water meets a consent limit, remove dissolved contaminants or guarantee zero carry-over. Monitoring and other safeguards remain part of the site design.
Review Normal and Abnormal Conditions
Identify the liquids that should and should not pass, their density and viscosity ranges, solids, emulsions, flow, temperature and available head. Consider what happens when the valve closes and how retained material will be handled. Recovery and disposal arrangements must be reviewed separately.
Process-Data Checklist
- Liquid identities, density and viscosity at operating temperature
- Minimum, normal and maximum temperature and pressure
- Required flow, available head and downstream conditions
- Solids, emulsions, wax or flashing risks
- Connection sizes, materials and a vessel or P&ID sketch
Common Application Questions
Does installing a valve guarantee discharge compliance?
No. Discharge requirements depend on the complete process and applicable limits. The valve is one component and does not replace treatment, monitoring or site-specific review.
Can it reduce product loss?
It can help retain a separate lighter phase when correctly selected and operated. Any savings claim should be supported by measurements from the actual application.
